Sushi, Second Chances, and Financial Redemption

How can someone give such bad news and seem so happy about it?
BECAUSE IT'S NOT BAD NEWS!
*******************

It has been a while, but I am just now getting to blog about my 1-1 with Bankruptcy Attorney, Jason Boyer of Boyer/Tadros Law.

Like many of my most favorite one-to-one meetings, we were at "I Luv Sushi" in Lakewood. There is something about Spicy Tuna and Miso Soup that gets the brain working.

I had always assumed that bankruptcy was the financial equivalent of the mark of Cain; the kiss of death for credit and social acceptance; the end of a very tragic story. However, between bites of raw fish, Jason explained that bankruptcy is nothing of the sort. "It's not an end," he said, "bankruptcy is the beginning of a new life for my clients. A second chance."

It turns out, much to my surprise, that bankruptcy laws were written for people who are responsible, though unfortunate and for those who deserve a second chance. "They have been around since the first caveman borrowed the first rock," he explained. Using fancy bankruptcy law terms that I pretended to understand (you know, because I'm a lawyer), Jason showed more than an exceptional knowledge and understanding of the subject, he also a clear drive and strong passion for doing it.

The irony of getting paid to help people go broke was not lost on him and he agrees that a well-established sense of humor is a must when dealing with such sadness. I learned, though, that the sadness is only momentary because Jason can and does make it better. He looks through the present and into the future for all of his clients, and that future is bright.

Lastly, I discovered that Jason and I are cut from the same cloth. Like me, he does what he does because he believes in it, because he believes in second chances and [financial] redemption... and when the excrement hits the mobile air circulator, a guy like Jason is who you want by your side.

  1. What do I enjoy more...sushi, or financial redemption? It is a close contest. Thanks for the ups, David.
