Before I joined BNI, I would have thought that "Power Team" referred to the Williams Sisters of Professional Tennis, maybe the Kennedy's or Bush's of politics, or the Pittsburgh Steelers of the 1970s. While the aforementioned are indeed powerful in their own right, the real power for real people is in BNI's Power Teams.
When you attend SoCal BNI's power team training you will learn that Power Teams are about standards and accountability, both true and both vital. You will also learn that any Power Team is only as strong as the commitment of each individual member. Again, absolutely true, but there is so much more.
Our Power Team, the Long Beach Life Savers, is made up of members from both the Abundance and High Trust chapters of SoCal BNI and the origin is pretty simple: 5 Attorneys from 5 different practice areas got together with a Paralegal, an Enrolled Agent (Tax), and a Real Estate Broker to form a circle of contacts and referrals that would be virtually self-perpetuating from week to week. In the first week, we passed multiple referrals to one another...and to others in our respective chapters. Success!
As a Power Team, we enjoy good chemistry, highly compatible fields, and the desire to grow our respective businesses - and those of our chapter-mates. That, alone, is a recipe for a solid Power Team. However, it seems we share something else in common: The philosophy that helping ourselves need not be to the exclusion of helping others. Simply put, we all enjoy helping those who need, but may not necessarily be able to afford, some of what we can offer. And, our vision changed.
The Long Beach Life Savers has committed to bringing vital, possibly life-saving, information to the masses; information that may be readily available, but most people don't know to look for it. Through a series of scheduled workshops, that are absolutely FREE and open to the public, the Life Savers will help folks understand things like how bankruptcy can be a beginning, not an end; why one should plan now to protect one's property and assets after death; how landlords and tenants can peacefully coexist; necessary steps to avoid the perils & pitfalls of starting that small business; what police can & can't do; how to apply immigration law to make the process easier; how to turn a distressed property into a secure investment; and how to navigate the complex and nerve-racking tax code without having a nervous breakdown in the process.
In addition, the Life Savers, one or all, will answer the call to speak before groups of all sizes and demographics, absolutely free. The Life Savers will never sell or offer to sell anything at these workshops and speaking engagements - we are strictly about providing information.
Why do we do it? Because Givers Gain!
The math is very simple: The people we help will remember us next time trouble finds them. They will [hopefully] know what to do to minimize the problems as they arise and we will be better able to assist them if the time ever comes. Moreover, each person who hears us speak becomes a potential new member of our growing network; people we can refer to and through our chapter-mates.
Plus, there's VCP: We gain Visibility every time we speak to a group. While the audience receives important, usable information, the Life Savers - one and all - gain Credibility, and all BNI members know what comes next.
